The Hymnal
" Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens." "
Psalm 119:89
For me, there are few things better on an early winter morning than sitting in front of the fireplace, before the world comes to life and the business of the day sets in. It's pure joy to have a hot drink, a soft blanket, and a candle flickering nearby as I settle into a time for reflection, rest, and focus on God and His love. For me, true comfort and peace are found in this practice of solitude, as I draw close to God each morning. Surrounded by my Bible, a few devotionals, and my desire to commune with the Lord, I declare this the best part of my day .
This morning, as I settled in, I grabbed an old church hymnal to flip through the pages. I was curious, how many would be familiar? I began with the Christmas hymns, and, within minutes, I found myself lost within the pages, offering the words as a worship to our Lord. Time seemingly stood still. I wonder if heaven will be a bit like what I experienced this morning.
So many treasures within the pages, and each one spoke tenderly to my heart. Under each title was the scripture reference of the melody, and I realized how deeply ingrained from God's word is each one. Not only are they beautiful songs, but expressions of our journeys here on earth. Each represents just how rich the scriptures are, how timelessly relevant. I pondered the wonderful, meaningful ways these songs supply praise, inspiration, assurance, trust of our faith, and, most of all, redemption.
This time of year can be busy and full of activity, so I share my thoughts in hopes that it will inspire you to create space to enjoy quiet time with God. For me, it is the most precious time. It can lead to healing from hurts, discovering hope, inspire worship, and strengthen your faith.

Below are a few ole’ Christmas Hymns and each scripture inspiration:
“Emmanuel”-
They will call him Immanual-which means God with us. Matthew 1:23
“Angels We Have Heard on High”-
The heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God. Luke 2:13
“Go, Tell it on the Mountain”-
Let them shout from the mountaintops. Let them give glory to the Lord. Isaiah 42:11-12
“Silent Night, Holy Night!”
They….found Mary, and Joseph, and the Baby. Luke 2:16
I hope you’ll make time for one of these suggestions or find another time of deep reflection during this Christmas Season:
If your house does not hold a Hymnal, consider buying one. I plan to give one as a Christmas gift this year. Here is the link to my copy of The Hymnal for Worship & Celebration. This jewel has been in my house for 25 years, and just today I noticed the forward was written by one of my favorites, Chuck Swindoll.
Plan for yourself or give the gist of a one-day quiet retreat. I'll be attending one at The Ignatius House in Atlanta.
Plan lunch or dinner with some friends and share devotion and prayer needs with each other. I recently hosted this with a few friends, and the prayer time was so special. Each woman expressed deep gratitude towards me.
I would love to hear how you will carve out some peace and solitude this Christmas: would you leave your comments or ideas below?
I would love to hear from you!
